What exactly, is a "Peel"?
Light Superficial Peels: Often referred to as Micro Peels and otherwise known as the "lunchtime peel" because of the lack of downtime. They consist of an Alpha-Hydroxy acid (glycolic, lactic, or citric acid), or a Beta-Hydroxy acid (salicylic acid). These peels are designed to help smooth fine lines, promote skin clarity, even skin color, improve texture, refine pores and reduce acne prone conditions. In the hands of a skilled and knowledgeable technician these peels can be adapted to safely treat just about any skin type. The after effectgs of this peel consist of little or no flaking/peeling and litle or no redness. You can expect your skin to feel tighters, firmer, smoother and softer with an increased glow. For the best effect, they need to be done in a series
. The purpose behind all of this, is that by thoroughly exfoliating the superficial layer of the skin on a regular basis, the body is stimulated. This stimulation promotes collagen regeneration while maintaining a more youthful look to the skin as well as reducing sun damage.
Medium depth peels: consist of Tricholacetic acid. There is about one week of downtime. You look like you have a severe sunburn with possible mild swelling. Peeling occurs in 3-5 days. Then there is mild pinkness for several more days. This is easily camoflaged with makeup.
Deep Peels: Phenol acid is used in the deeper chemical peels. Generally suggested to greatly reduce the appearance of lines around the mouth. A scabbing will form which takes about 10 days to fall off. Redness will take several weeks to disappear. This procedure can also be camouflaged with makeup. Dermabrasion is a high speed sanding device. It is often recommended to improve the appearance of acne pitting scars. Deep peels involve a lengthy healing process and are performed strictly by a doctor.
